Afro-Boston DocuPoetry 12x12
Sentinel (2003), Fern Cunningham (Forest Hills Cemetery)
Afro-Boston DocuPoetry 12x12 is a literary art experience that combines source materials with photography/videography and poetry writing. During the months of February, March and April 2022 we will research 12 different sites of African-American Ourstory in Boston (Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, and the West, North & South Ends). We will use key people and events from each of the 12 sites to build writing assignments and generate 12 poems for publication here on this site. Come join us to uncover new & poetic meaning and overstanding right under your nose and my nose and our neighbors’ noses (smile).
Poem #1 of 12
She Holds
Cold africa in her embrace
is it?
Tired rented american skin
winded youthful grin
february’s deceit
drawing the Earth age’s warmth in
with each breath
waiting for New England spring.
